What is a RailsCamp?

A regular, inclusive, friendly gathering of Ruby enthusiasts. Together we’ll be sharing our knowledge, helping each other learn, hacking on projects large and small and generally having loads of fun together.

What to expect:

  • Hacking (bring a project idea)
  • Learning and teaching (watch talks, find a mentor, bring a speaking topic)
  • Werewolf
  • Campfire chats and toasted marshmallows
  • Making new friends

Who should attend?

You should totally attend! The event is open to anyone, but if you’re generally interested in technology or coding you’ll find you’ll have an even better time. For details about under 18s attending please check the relevant section below.

RailsCamp is an inclusive event, and attendees who purchase a ticket agree to abide by the Ruby Australia Code of Conduct. We welcome everyone and ensure a safe inclusive space for all.

Where, What, When?

This camp will be a little less remote than others, and is based at YMCA’s Camp North Pine, next door to Old Petrie Town in the north of Brisbane, complete with a working blacksmith’s forge, pottery barn, and an old fashioned lolly shop. On the Sunday morning this will be also host to the Petrie Markets.

Your ticket will include dorm accommodation, 3 meals a day, non-alcoholic drinks, fruit and some snacks. Coffee? We’ll have an onsite barista providing coffee on Saturday and Sunday, mornings and plenty of beans from Sample Coffee for your Aeropress/Chemex needs. We’ll be providing buses from/to the Brisbane CBD and Domestic Airport, and we’ll try to facilitate a way for you to rideshare with people driving where possible (expect these seats to be extremely limited).

A small number of camping tickets will be available – due to limited space we cannot guarantee you’ll be camping on grass, and most of the available camping space is on gravel, so we strongly recommend bringing a ground mat. Make sure you purchase a camping ticket if you want to camp, otherwise there may not be enough space for your tent.

We’re still finalising the exact pick up details but please be ready for collection from the Airport or CBD by 3pm – this means your flight should arrive by 2:30pm at the latest.  We’ll have you back to the airport by 11am on Monday the 21st of May.

Tickets

Tickets are $300 including GST and can be purchased here. Bedding packages are an extra $30 and are compulsory if you aren’t bringing your own pillow/sleeping bag.

We will be offering a diversity ticket program to make heavily discounted tickets available to members of underrepresented groups – details coming soon! If you would like to help us extend the reach of these tickets, feel free to make a personal donation here.

Under 18s

Rails Camps have historically been for adults only. If you are under 18 and wish to attend, or would like to bring your child with you, please contact the organiser prior to purchasing tickets or flights to discuss, as this will not be possible for all events. Any under 18s must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian. Please bear in mind that, unlike many other camps, there are very few organised activities at Rails Camp and you are responsible for filling in your own time.
